Before Your First Session
-
Teletherapy
It’s important to make sure that you have an appropriate set up for a teletherapy session. A desktop or laptop is preferred due to having a bigger screen. Make sure you have access to high bandwidth internet, your computer or laptop has updated, and that your lighting isn’t behind you so you don’t get washed out. Check to be sure that your camera and audio work before your first session.
-
Privacy
Being in a secure, private place that is comfortable and safe, as well as having headphones that are noise cancelling and connect directly to your device is highly recommended for sessions.
-
Insurance
It’s always useful to know what your coverage for therapy looks like, especially if you’re using insurance. You can call your provider and ask about in-network and out-of-network benefits, as well as if teletherapy is covered, and any copays and deductibles you may have. You can find some more specific questions to ask in the FAQ page.
-
Collaboration
Therapy is a collaborative process. Therapist and client work together as a team to explore concerns and ways of managing those concerns. It requires time and effort! Therapy isn’t just advice, it’s skill-building and dedicated work.
-
Scheduling
I’ll usually recommend recurring appointments for my clients. We know that sometimes schedules will change if there’s a shift in work or class, but consider what time would work best for you. Therapy can be tiring, so make sure that you’re scheduling your sessions at a time where you can process what was discussed in session.

Ask Questions
If you’re not sure about something, ask! If you’re new to therapy, it can be very overwhelming, but don’t be afraid to voice your concerns and ask if you’re unsure about something or want to learn more!
